What is The Marvelous Mrs Maisel about?
The Marvelous Mrs Maisel is a comedy drama set in 1958 New York City. It centres around the trials and tribulations of Midge Maisel, a beautiful Jewish New Yorker who seems to have it all. Living a comfy lifestyle with her husband and kids in their trendy Upper West Side apartment, she embodies the perfect 1950s housewife lifestyle.
But this all changes when her businessman hubby Joel, who moonlights as a struggling stand-up comedian, confesses to Midge that not only has he been having an affair with his secretary – but he’s leaving his family for her.
Devastated Midge goes on a drunken rampage, only to leap onto stage and give stand-up comedy a go. And - would you know - she’s surprisingly good at it, so much so that she begins to consider it as a potential career.
Over the course of the first eight-episode series, Midge tries to forge a new comedy career, all while juggling lfe as a single mother and facing up to her divorce. Will she make it through, or will she resign herself to a life at home and inevitably taking Joel back?
In season 2, following Midge’s triumph at the Gaslight, the fallout from her takedown of Sophie Lennon looms large, making her climb up the comedy ladder more challenging than ever.
As the actual grind of being a comic begins to take its toll on Midge, the pressure to come clean to her family weighs on her – especially as her choices have a ripple effect on everyone around her.

What are the critics saying?
Created by Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel currently boasts a 96% Rotten Tomatoes approval rating. IndieWire describes the series as having "a much-needed message for our times" with the "appeal of a Mad Men-with-a-feminine-flair production design" and says it's "well on its way to becoming the next obsession for Gilmore Girls devotees".
Slate, meanwhile calls the programme "a stylish, fun show that is neither punishing nor idiotic, an escape from reality that is tethered, ever so slightly, to reality”.
