Fear begins here
The first episode starts before the apocalypse and Rick Grimes waking up from his coma in The Walking Dead. Set in Los Angeles, the first season focuses on the dual families of the Clarks and Manawas.
Madison Clark (Kim Dickens) and Travis Manawa (Cliff Curtis) are a couple, who work as a school counsellor and English teacher. Madison has two kids from her first marriage, 19-year-old heroin addict, tearaway and dropout Nick (Frank Dillane) and overachieving model student Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey).
Travis has one son from his marriage to Liza Ortiz (Elizabeth Rodriguez), rebellious teen Christopher (Lorenzo Henrie).
Nick witnesses ‘patient zero’, as his girlfriend Gloria turns into a corpse-eating monster and he is forced to flee his heroin den. Madison and Travis begin to believe Nick's story when drug dealer Calvin is killed and attacks them all.
The Manawas pick up the Salazar family, barber Daniel, who has a dark past in El Salvador, and his wife Griselda and daughter Ofelia, as they escape a rioting mob.
The army attempt to take control with a mysterious ‘Operation Cobalt’, which Daniel Salazar discovers means killing all civilians and the army fleeing.
Nick and Griselda are taken away by the army because of their poor health and while locked up, Nick has his first meeting with Victor Strand (Colman Domingo), a slick-talking businessman with a plan to survive.
The series concludes with action-packed final two episodes as Travis has his beliefs in the army shattered – he even ends up brutally attacking Cpl Andrew Adams, who takes a shot (after a short-lived romance) at Ofelia.
Meanwhile, Daniel sets loose a stadium of infected to give the group time to rescue Nick and Griselda. Tragically, it’s too late for Griselda who dies from her infections while under the care of Lisa.
Lisa is also bitten as the group unite and take a lead from Strand, who believes he has the safest way out of Los Angeles – a boat.Madison and Travis initially think the best plan is to head to the desert, but end up agreeing to head off with Victor on his ship, the Abigail.
Who we lost
Lisa Ortiz – Bitten during the group’s escape and shot dead by Travis to avoid her turning into an infected.
Griselda Salazar (Patricia Reyes Spindola) – Dies from her injuries caused by the riots in Los Angeles.
Artie Costa (Scott Lawrence). We never saw how school headteacher Artie turn, but we see Madison smash the zombie version over the head with a fire extinguisher to save pupil Tobias.
No safe harbour
The group are still not sure of Strand’s true intentions, but they join him anyway and set course for San Diego.
Along the way, they discover the dangers of zombies in the water, news about the army bombing the entire West Coast and Alicia makes a naïve mistake, befriending a boy called Jack over the radio.
Nick also learns a new survival method – coating himself in infected blood to avoid detection.
Along the way, the group have to battle Jack and a group of pirates, who hijack them and Strand makes a brutal decision to cut off two survivors from a plane crash, Alex and Jake.
Alex would be seen again by Travis, when he is locked up by Jack and co but that is the last we see of her on the show.
Eventually Strand’s secret is revealed and his plan is to reunite with his lover Thomas Abigail. The survivors land in Mexico, but Strand is too late for Thomas who has been bitten.
The group are taken in by Celia Flores, the mother of one of Thomas and Strand's close friends, but she refuses to kill the infected. While her methods enchant Nick, it places everyone in great danger. She banishes Strand after he shoots Thomas and Madison ends up killing Celia by locking her in with the infected. Salazar, who has had flashbacks to his dark past, sets fire to the compound and is presumed dead.
Chris has been crumbling since the death of his mum and has scared Alicia and Madison with his sinister actions. He flees the group and Travis chooses to follow him rather than his new family.
In the second half of the season, Madison, Alicia, Strand and Ofelia discover a new group of survivors at a luxury hotel, while Nick takes his own path, stumbling upon his future lover Luciana and her settlement, the Colonia.
Nick forms a close bond with Luciana and Colonia leader Alejandro, performing supply runs and helping them in a doomed battle with gangsters.
Chris abandons Travis for a new gang of pals including the nasty Brandon and Derek, but pays for his decision with the ultimate price and Ofelia runs away from the hotel and heads to the Mexican border on her own.
In the final episode, Nick and Luciana are attacked and held at gunpoint at the border, Ofelia is captured by a man with a rifle and Travis discovers the shocking truth about what happened to his son.
When Americans Brandon and Derek bump into Madison, she is unable to move them on before Travis gets his hands on them, forcing them to confess that they killed Chris.
Who we lost?
Chris Manawa – The sulky teen paid the price for trusting a bunch of obnoxious and nasty guys over his own father. His death was the first shocking departure from one of the main leads in the show.
Alejandro – He went out in style, sacrificing himself at Colonia to take revenge on the Mexican gangsters who wanted his land.
Thomas Abigail – Strand’s lover showed us another side to the slick businessman for the first time in season two. Victor would never be the same man after his partner and reason for initial reason for survival passed away.
Fear what you become
Season three centred on the arrival of the Otto clan, a group of preppers who have set up a successful community with the supplies and means to survive.
However, the Ottos are racist, their land was taken from Native Americans and the youngest son, Troy (Daniel Sharman) is slightly unhinged. The Clarks first meet him when he’s experimenting on prisoners to see how long they take to turn.
In the most shocking Fear the Walking Dead death so far, Travis is killed off. After surviving a brutal showdown in a pit of walkers at the hands of Troy and reuniting Nick with Madison, he gets a shot while being helicoptered back to the Otto ranch with Alicia. In a final noble act, he jumps from the helicopter to stop himself turning and placing Alicia in danger.
Although viewers would warm slightly to Troy across the season and Madison and Nick would form a bond with the troubled youngster, Jeremiah Otto (Dayton Callie) would move in the opposite direction.
Across the season we would learn more about his drinking and violent past and how he came to get the land from Native American leader Taqa (Michael Greyeyes). Taqa, his sidekick Crazy Dog and their new recruit… Ofelia Salzar, eventually win the battle against the Ottos and Clarks, forcing Nick and Madison to take drastic action.
Nick kills Jeremiah, providing his head as a sacrifice so the two communities can live together.
The third Otto, elder brother Jake (Sam Underwood) forms a romantic relationship with Alicia. A training lawyer before the apocalypse, Jake is the calm and reasonable side of the family, but the divisions between the Ottos and Taqa run too deep even for him to bring them all together.
Jake is the second Otto to die, falling at the hands of a zombie herd, which Troy has pulled together to take out his families ranch.
A second storyline in season three is at the Tijuana dam, which is initially controlled by the brutal Dante, before the generous and empathetic Lola Guerrero takes over.
The dam is where Daniel Salazar returns and it is the former barber who kills of Dante. He is also reunited with his frenemy Victor Strand at the dam and he saves his life after Victor vows to reunite him with Ofelia. Strand lets him down and will also go on to betray the Clarks in the finale as he sets up a takeover of the dam.
The final episodes of the season see Madison, Nick, Victor and Taqa in a race against time to get an injured Ofelia to Daniel so they can be reunited before she dies. However, they are just out of time as Daniel is brought back to Ofelia in her final breaths.
Alicia attempts to go solo following the death of Jake, but when she bumps into the latest big bad, biker Proctor John, she finds herself face to face with her family again.
Before the final showdown, Troy pushes Madison too far one to many times and she smashes him in the head with a hammer. Her darkest moment in the show yet, she kills the final Otto family member in cold blood.
In the final episode of the season, Proctor John’s men attempt to take control of the dam, but Nick pulls the trigger on an explosive that pulls the whole thing down. The only known survivor at the end of the episode is Madison. Victor, Alicia, Nick and Daniel were all on the dam as it crumbled and caused huge destruction.
Who we lost
Travis Manawa – It’s still too soon. We’re not over it.
Ofelia Salazar – Oh Daniel. Of Ofelia. The fact they never got their full reunion was just too much to take.
The Ottos – We were glad to see the back of Jeremiah and Jake was too good for this world, but weirdly it was the death of bad boy Troy that moved us the most. How could you Madison?
Daniel Salazar (Ruben Blades) – Last seen in the cliffhanger ending to season 3, holding on to Nick as the dam collapsed. Did he survive the explosion? We think it takes more than that to finish off the Salvadoran barber.
Tobias (Lincoln A. Castellanos) – Last seen way back in season one, student Tobias was prepared for the apocalypse way ahead of everyone else. We last saw him back at the school picking up supplies. Could he still be out there and reunite with his former mentor Madison?
Alex (Michelle Ang) – Last season in early season two, the Flight 462 survivor was powerful, smart and resourceful. Could she ever bump into Strand again and cause him some trouble?
Taqa (Michael Greyeyes) and Crazy Dog (Justin Rain) – They lost their people, but helped save Madison, Nick and Alicia in the finale. Where did they head next? Maybe we’ll never know.
What do we know?
In Season 4 of Fear the Walking Dead, fans saw the world of Madison Clark (Kim Dickens) and her family through new eyes — the eyes of Morgan Jones (Lennie James), joining the story from the world of The Walking Dead.
In the new season, the characters’ immediate past mixed with an uncertain present struggle and discovery as they met new friends, foes and threats. They fought for each other, against each other and against a legion of the dead, all to somehow build an existence amid the crushing pressure of lives coming apart. There was darkness and light; terror and grace; the heroic, mercenary, and craven, all crashing together towards a new reality for Fear the Walking Dead.
We joined our season 3 survivors at a baseball stadium in Texas, where they had regrouped and built a new community following the dam explosion. Despite being welcoming to new arrivals, their happy stay ended when they were betrayed by a young girl named Charlie. She had been spying on the group for a gang called the Vultures.
The Vultures, led by Melvin and Ennis, wanted to claim the land and resources of the stadium and the battles between the two communities would ultimately end in four major deaths.
Madison died in the stadium, sacrificing herself for everyone else, after Ennis sent a pack of flaming zombies loose on the stadium. Nick would get revenge by brutally murdering the Vulture. However, he was shot in the back shortly after by Charlie.
In a final showdown between the two groups, the last remaining Clark, Alicia refused to save Melvin, stabbing him in the head as he begged for mercy,
The group met four major new characters on their journey - Morgan Jones, his new best friend, cowboy John Dorie, John's love interest June and war reporter Althea. Alicia, Strand and Luciana regrouped with the new foursome at the end of the season - after Morgan called an end to their rivalries and tensions.
Who we lost
Madison Clark - Unless you think Kim Dickens scaled the stadium fence and ran away, somehow escaping thousands of flaming zombies, she really is gone.
Nick Clark - He looked at the flowers. You should never look at the flowers in the Walking Dead universe.
What do we know about the second half of season 4?
The first half of season four began with one figure huddled around a campfire and ended with nine. Characters who started their journeys in isolation collided with each other in unexpected ways and found themselves in one of the last places they ever expected to be... together.
In the back half of the season they will explore who they are now – as individuals and as part of the greater group – and how they will forge ahead. They will find themselves pitted against new adversaries – human, walker, and even nature itself. Theirs will be a journey fraught with danger, love, heartbreak, loss, and ultimately, hope.
