Back in the early noughties we were all in thrall to the delightfully dotty adventures of Renée Zellweger’s Bridget Jones. And we’re happy to report the iconic comedy has matured like a fine wine.
Our eponymous heroine is now a successful TV news producer, but as single as an individually wrapped slice of cheese and as accident-prone as ever. The proof of that is a surprise bun in the oven and a duo of potential dads in the frame.
Here are five reasons to coo over Bridget Jones’s Baby:
The Hollywood actress was Oscar-nominated for her first outing as Bridget Jones and despite a modicum of maturity creeping in, she’s still as bubbly as a bottle of, well, bubbly. Warm, endearing, ditzy and deeply funny.
Colin Firth and Patrick Dempsey
Colin Firth’s uptight Mark Darcy and Patrick ‘McDreamy’ Dempsey’s suave billionaire Jack Quant bicker brilliantly as Bridget’s battling suitors, either one of whom could be the father to her child.
The supporting cast
The double cream of British comedy is present and while Gemma Jones, Jim Broadbent, Joanna Scanlon, Sarah Solemani and Sally Phillips find laughs in every nook and cranny, Emma Thompson exploits her role as co-writer to keep some of the best line for herself. Plus, there’s a funny bit with Ed Sheeran.
If it ain’t broke…
The latest Bridget instalment stays true to the original and shoehorns in a few knowing nods – cue All By Myself. And despite the fact nobody’s actually written a diary since 2004, there’s not a blog post or Tinder swipe in sight.
It’s very, very funny
Packed with hilariously ill-judged decision-making, rib-tickling one-liners and moments so awkward they should be preserved in Perspex, this is simply the funniest Bridget Jones yet. Enjoy.
