Criminal is Netflix's latest TV darling - a unique and ambitious series that focuses on the intense mental conflict between suspect and detective in a police interrogation room.

But if you’ve already binge-watched all four episodes of Criminal: UK and sampled the others from Spain, France and Germany, you must be ready and waiting for a second series of the show.

So is there going to be a second series? Will the cast be back? What will it be about? Though no official announcements have been made by Netflix, we’ve done some digging to find out what we know…

When is season 2 of Criminal on Netflix?

At this stage, Criminal hasn’t been greenlit for a second series by Netflix - but that’s not to say it won’t happen in the future.

In an interview with Cosmopolitan UK, Criminal showrunners Jim Field Smith and George Kay revealed they're hoping the series is recommissioned.

"We hope there will be more, we're talking about it at the minute," the creators said.

The pair added that, like Netflix - who are surely pondering a series renewal - they’re waiting to see how the audience reacts to the series before any decisions are made on a potential season 2.

They continued in the same interview: "We hope to bring this arena to more people [worldwide], because that's how I think the show can evolve and keep breathing.

“We'd love to do more UK episodes, but until we see how people react to this show we're not 100% sure what to do next. We're still delivering it right now."

[7 Questions with… Criminal’s Nicholas Pinnock]

Who’s in the cast of Criminal season 2?

Without a series 2 renewal, we don’t know which of the Criminal season 1 cast have been contracted for a second series.

However some of the show’s stars have dropped major hints that they’d be up for a return to their characters.

In a BT TV exclusive interview, Nicholas Pinnock - who plays Detective Paul Ottager, below - says: “I’m all in for as many [seasons] as they want me for.

“I think it’s a great concept, a great way of telling stories, it’s a way of telling stories that we don’t see very often, or at all, which is what made me fall in love with it.”

In an interview with, Katherine Kelly (Natalie Hobbs) revealed she hoped the series would continue - strongly suggesting she’d be up for a return.

Kelly said: “You can’t predict how well something is going to go down with an audience. You can only go with the script. I've stopped trying to predict how it goes with audiences. I definitely think it could [return for a season 2], I hope so.

"It’s definitely unique though… it’s brave storytelling, it really compliments the audience. It’s not easy listening, you have to work it out."

And in the same interview, Kelly’s co-star Rochenda Sandall admitted the potential growth of the show was one of the things that appealed to her in playing the role of police officer Vanessa Warren.

She said: "There's potential for it to grow. The possibilities are endless with this show. We forget on this small little island that people watch Netflix all over the world. It could be massive."

What will happen in season 2 of Criminal?

The storylines for a potential season 2 of Criminal are not yet known at this point - whether we continue with the same stories from season 1, or introduce all-new characters.

In fact, predicts that the crime drama could take place on a completely new continent / country in season 2 e.g. Asia, South America or Africa.

If we do stick with the same regular cast members, there would be potential to explore some of the characters in greater detail - perhaps outside of the three rooms that season 1 is filmed in.

Speaking exclusively to BT TV about what he’d like to explore in possible follow-up seasons of Criminal, Nicholas Pinnock tells us he’d like to dig a bit deeper under the skin of his character.

He says: "That [love triangle] is definitely one of them [between Ottager, Hobbs and Myerscough], just to see how the dynamic of that affects his work, if it affects his work.

"Also understanding how he gets confessions and what his thought pattern is to getting people to fold basically, I think that’s a very interesting element that we have't touched on with him.

"Also what his relationship is to a lot of the other characters, because they’ve all worked together for a while, he's left and they've all bonded, and he's come back into the fold and that’s mixed things up a bit - the chain reaction of all those things would be interesting to explore."

Criminal season 1 is streaming on Netflix now.
