Are ‘pushy parents’ on the rise? Survey reveals more parents want fame for their kids than ever

The research for Lifetime's Making A Model with Yolanda Hadid had some surprising findings.

A new survey from Lifetime has revealed that millions of Brits want their kids to be famous and that parents are now spending more time managing their children’s social channels than giving advice on how to dress and what to eat.

The study has found that two fifths of Brits (40 per cent) admitted to wanting significant input over their child’s career choices.

On the topic of career management, British men are more eager to take the reins – with one in ten (10 per cent) stating they would like to fully manage their child’s career, compared to just seven per cent of British women.

The study of 2,000 UK adults revealed that Brits are keen for their children to rise to fame, with over three-quarters (83 per cent) stating they’d be keen for them to have a job in the public eye (such as modelling and acting), in order to propel their status.

The survey was commissioned by TV channel Lifetime® to mark the launch of its new show Making a Model with Yolanda Hadid, which airs on Thursday 8th February, 9pm (BT TV channel 329/384 HD).

The series focuses on the mother/daughter dynamic of working relationships.

Perhaps due to the polarising nature of social media platforms, the survey results showed that Brits now spend more time trying to advise their children on what they should - and should not - post on their social channels, rather than giving advice on traditional aspects such as how to dress and what to eat.

Top five areas parents are most likely to counsel their child/children on:

1. How to behave
2. What to post on social media
3. What to eat
4. What job to choose
5. How to dress

A spokesperson for Lifetime, said: “From these poll findings, it’s surprising to see the level of influence parents wish to exert over their child’s choice of career, alongside changing priorities in their upbringing. Ten years ago, would any of us have guessed that the use of social media would be a bigger parenting responsibility than what to feed, or how to dress, their child?”

Making A Model with Yolanda Hadid starts on Lifetime at 9pm, Thursday February 8 - BT TV channel 329/384 HD.
