Curvy Brides Boutique presenters Jo Cooke and Alison Law: 'Only a fat girl can do a show about fat fashion' – 3 reasons to watch TLC’s plus-size fairy godmothers

BT TV meets the Curves and Couture duo, who are making us cry and laugh every Friday night with their mix of emotional stories and Essex bling.

It's not often that an interview gets halted halfway through because the interviewees want to shout 'Oi! Oi' in appreciation of a group of hunky army men driving past. But Curvy Brides Boutique stars Jo Cooke and Alison Law are no ordinary TV stars.

"We're just two normal girls who have had a struggle and we've been blessed with this opportunity," says Jo.

The pair's third series of CBB is currently airing on Fridays on TLC and the show centres on Alison and Jo turning plus-size brides dreams into reality.

In their own words, here are three reasons you should be watching Curvy Brides Boutique.

1. "Only a fat girl can do a show about fat fashion"

This is just what we do every day. The cameras just follow us. If we didn’t have them, we'd still do this because it's our passion.

Did we think it would be so successful? Hell no! Can we imagine our lives going back to the way they were and not have a film crew in tow? No! It’s been so much fun.

It's not work when you’re with your bestie.

Only a fat girl can do a show about fat fashion.

The challenges fat people face every single day, it wouldn’t even enter the minds of skinny girls. There are so many challenges of being a plus-size man or plus-size man, emotionally and physically. And we’re the only show dealing with that.

People relate to us because we’re real women.

The problem is that so many celebrities who were plus size are suddenly no longer plus-size. You have to wonder whether that’s down to surgical procedures, which they can now afford.

We deal with a section of society that is usually left to the wayside. We get people ask us, 'do girls that fat actually get married?' We asked that woman to leave the shop. She was there looking for her daughter, who she believed was really big at a size 14.

That comment was horrifying.

2. Fairytale endings

At some point in everyone's lives, they can empathise with the bride standing there - they want to feel amazing, but they just don’t. That moment when you're at an all-time low.

It ends positively every week with a wedding, a moment where you realise somebody loves you and accepts you just for the way you are.

The fact we don't follow a script or format, that's what people love. We just follow the madness of real life and people like that.

We say what we feel, mean what we say and there's no walking on eggshells. It is what it is with us.

It's all about the wedding dress. It’s about that fantasy the bride has had since she dressed up aged 3. Whether women care to admit it, we all dream of the fairytale wedding with our Prince Charming.

The groom likes to think it’s a bit about him, but it really isn’t. It’s about the bride, the dress, the confidence, her actually believing that she's worth it. That’s our main goal on this show, making every bride feel that she is absolutely worth it.

3. A celebrity special that needs to happen

Alison Hammond – let’s be honest – we would laugh all day and all night. She could get on our table and because it’s a table for a plus-size girl it wouldn’t break. Alison, we would love you on the show. She could bring Rylan with her. Alison Hammond – come on down!
