A headline tour at London’s O2 arena, best-selling DVDs and his very own long-running weekly BBC show.
It’s safe to say that Russell Howard is one of the hottest properties in comedy right now.
Tonight, Russell returns to Comedy Central for a brand new series of Stand Up Central – where Russell and some of the country's best comedians including Jimmy Carr and Katherine Ryan perform hilarious sets at the Electric Ballroom.
BT TV caught up with the 36-year-old comedian to talk about touring with his mum and get the top 4 reasons why we have to watch Stand Up Central…
1. One of the best comedians in the world is on Stand Up Central
“Tommy Tiernan is an Irish comic who I believe is one of the finest in the world. The set he did at the show was absolutely riveting. He’s a spellbinding comic and it was a pleasure to share a stage with him. There’s a guy called Steve Williams who is excellent and Kerry Godliman is one of the best comics I’ve seen in years.”
2. It’s all new Russell Howard material
“It’s all new from me and loads of questions from the audience. I’ll be talking about patriotism, croissants, adult colouring in and jellyfish attacks amongst other things. It’s a pretty eclectic show.
3. He’s not just for laughs. He also makes serious points in his comedy, too
“I guess the latest bunch of stuff is possibly a bit angrier than other stand-up , but then the last series of Russell Howard’s Good News was more ranty. Stuff like the junior doctors contracts, the tampon tax and the behaviour of the Tory MP Philip Davies got me quite fired up.”
4. We should catch him while we can as next year Russell’s off to America to make a new show…with his mum
“It’s gonna be amazing. We’re spending time with UFO hunters, preppers, cowboys, spiritualists, hip hop gurus, pot smoking soccer moms and checking out a pensioner beauty pageant. I want to show her loads of wild slices of Americana.
“Audiences around the world are all pretty similar. People just rock up and want to have a laugh, although Americans whoop more than English crowds.”
Russell Howard’s Stand Up Central airs on Comedy Central at 10pm on Wednesday May 25. Comedy Central is BT Channel 307 (370 HD) and is also available on BT TV catch-up.
