Batman to Birdman - what is his greatest ever movie?

American actor, producer and director Michael Keaton shot to fame in the late 1970’s in sitcoms All’s Fair and The Tyler Moore Hour. He’s since gone on to star in some of the most highly acclaimed and most successful films of the last fourty years.

Michael Keaton plays Cold War Veteran Stan Hurley in 2017’s American Assassin. Instructing a CIA black ops recruit Mitch Rapp (Dylan O’Brien), the two are enlisted to investigate a shocking wave of attacks taking aim at both military and civilians. Before they know it, they’re embroiled in a vicious cat and mouse game in a bid to stop a mysterious operative who’s set on starting WWIII.

Taking home the 2014 Academy Award for Best Picture, Birdman (also known as The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) stars Keaton as washed up actor Riggan Thomson. Famous for playing superhero Birdman decades ago, he attempts to reignite his career by starring in a Broadway play. In a risky career move, he hopes it will prove his serious acting skills once and for all. Intense and at many times hilarious, Birdman served as the perfect art-imitating-life film to bring Keaton back to the forefront of Hollywood.

3. Spotlight - Available to buy now in the BT TV Store

The following year Spotlight took home the Academy Award for Best Picture. Starring Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams and John Slattery, Spotlight tells the true story of a team of Boston Globe journalists who in 2001 uncovered a plethora of priest molestations that went as far as the Vatican. Thrilling, tragic and incredibly moving, Spotlight received phenomenally positive reviews and Keaton was praised for his role playing real-life investigative reporter Walter V. Robinson.

In this truly wacky dark comedy Keaton plays a devious ghost Beetlejuice who arrives at a haunted house determined to get rid of the house’s new living tenants – even if this means by dangerous measures. Also starring Geena Davis, Alec Baldwin, Jeffrey Jones and Winona Ryder, Beetlejuice has become a solid cult favourite, and showcase Keaton’s comedic abilities.

5. Jackie Brown - Available to buy now in the BT TV Store

Paying tribute to 1970’s blaxploitation films, 1997’s Jackie Brown is an ultra-cool Quentin Tarantino film. Starring Pam Grier as Jackie Brown, she finds herself embroiled in a criminal underworld after being busted for smuggling money for an arms dealer Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson) while working as an air hostess. Keaton plays ATF agent Ray Nicolette who convinces Jackie to help take down Ordell. This is a must watch for both Tarantino fans and of the noir movie genre.

Keaton played Batman in the 1989 superhero megahit. He was praised for his impressive performance of Batman/Bruce Wayne, the wealthy orphaned philanthropist who transforms into a superhero to bring down Gotham City’s villains. Directed by Tim Burton, the movie was a success both critically and commercially and co-stars included Jack Nicholson, Kim Basinger and Michael Gough.
