5. Big

Many a Tom Hanks fan will count 1988’s fantasy drama Big as one of his best works. Tom plays the grown-up version of 13-year-old Josh, whose wish to be big comes true when he wakes up in the body of an adult man. Big takes a look at American corporate life through the innocent eyes of a child in an hilarious yet poignant way.

It’s easy to forget that Sheriff Woody Pride was in fact voiced by Tom Hanks in all three of the Toy Story movies. Stuffed toy Woody is his owner’s favourite toy until action spaceman Buzz Lightyear comes along and threatens his top spot. Much hilarity and adventure follows suit, resulting in a Disney/Pixar classic that’s beloved by adults and children alike.

7. Apollo 13

Apollo 13

Tom plays astronaut Jim Lovell in the 1995 classic space adventure movie Apollo 13. The film tells the true story of the aborted 1970 Apollo 13 lunar mission, in which NASA managed to get three astronauts home safely after their spacecraft malfunctioned. Hailed for its historical and scientific accuracy, the film received rave reviews and is still an absolutely riveting watch today.

8. Saving Private Ryan

The epic war drama Saving Private Ryan depicts the efforts of United States Army Rangers Captain John H. Miller (Tom Hanks) and a squad search for Private First Class James Francis Ryan (Matt Damon), who is the last-surviving brother of four servicemen.

A huge hit both commercially and critically, it is often regarded as one of the most accurate World War II movies for the way in which it graphically depicts major battles, including the Omaha Beach assault during the Normandy landings.

9. Sleepless in Seattle

1993 comedy Sleepless in Seattle recounts the romance between Sam (played by Tom) and Annie (played by Meg Ryan) who fall for each other after Annie hears Sam’s son’s radio plea to help his widowed dad find a new wife. A sentimental crowd-pleaser, Sleepless in Seattle also inspired 1998’s You’ve Got Mail, which reunited the two stars for an updated take on James Stewart’s 1940 classic The Shop Around the Corner.

10. The Green Mile

The Green Mile

Based on Stephen King’s novel, The Green Mile mixes drama with the supernatural as it takes a hard look at prisoner abuse and racism in Depression-era America. An incredibly intense and moving film, Tom plays Prison Officer Paul Edgecomb who, in a series of flashbacks, recalls the abuse he witnessed from fellow officers towards inmates and the supernatural powers and miracles performed by inmate John Coffey.
