I'm a Celebrity: 10 surprise jungle heroes

The unlikely jungle stars who redeemed themselves, revealed another side to their personalities, or just put a smile on our faces.

It’s that time of year again… No, not Christmas, but our annual jaunt Down Under to watch a bunch of celebrities set up camp in the jungle for our viewing pleasure. Let’s hope this year's chosen ones will be as entertaining as this lot…

Christopher Biggins

Panto star Biggins provided great entertainment (“oh yes he did!”) and certainly put the ‘camp’ in campfire when he appeared on the show in 2007. The series wouldn’t have been anywhere near as fun without his laughter and sparkle – and that moment he woke up and realised he’d been sharing his hammock with a rat.

Gillian McKeith

You Are What You Eat star McKeith had us gagging like a contestant faced with a plate of witchetty grubs when it emerged she had smuggled in spices in her pants in series 10. Hero might be the wrong word, but she certainly went down in I’m A Celeb history.

David Gest

With his wacky stories (“I was born in Taiwan; my father was a fisherman and my mother was a nun”) and bromances, Liza Minnelli’s ex was 2006’s most memorable contestant. Perhaps most bizarrely of all, after the show wrapped, he embarked on a romance with ex-Emmerdale actress and I’m A Celeb co-star Malandra Burrows.

Helen Flanagan

Most viewers only knew Flanagan as Rosie from Coronation Street when she entered the jungle in series 12. They soon found out the actress was quite the character in her own right. Her histrionics when faced with the bushtucker trials made riveting viewing.

Phil Tufnell

Phil Tufnell

The ex-cricketer – nicknamed The Cat for his habit of napping in the changing room - was crowned King of the Jungle in series two. He’s now a regular on The One Show, in which he indulges his passion for painting (who knew?) with segments about art.

Peter Andre

Pre-I’m A Celebrity, Andre was just that bloke who stood under a waterfall singing Mysterious Girl. His romance with Katie Price in series three had us hooked, and while their relationship didn’t last, he’s managed to build a new career as the star of several fly-on-the-wall documentaries and even hosts home improvement show 60-Minute Makeover.

Myleene Klass

Who’d have thought a simple white bikini could cause such a stir? The Hear'Say singer’s shower in her swimwear in series six helped the star rejuvenate her career. She later auctioned the bikini off and raised £7,500 for charity, and has rarely been off our tellies since.

Ashley Roberts

Nicole Scherzinger and Kimberly Wyatt were the only Pussycat Dolls we’d heard of before series 12 of I'm A Celebrity, when sunny, smiley Ashley Roberts appeared on screen. Before we knew it, she’d landed herself a judging role on Dancing on Ice and was recording a debut solo album, Butterfly Effect.

David Emanuel

Welsh fashion designer Emanuel was best known for designing Diana, Princess of Wales’ wedding dress before his jungle stint last year. The style guru won viewers over with his warm-heartedness, lost two stone and was crowned runner-up to Westlife’s Kian Egan.

Paul Burrell

Hero, villain, or just plain annoying, the former royal butler certainly got people talking when he appeared in series four. His melodramatic reactions to the bushtucker trials had us rolling about in laughter – and Ant and Dec struggling to keep a straight face.
