Netflix’s The Keepers: Everything you need to know about the new “Making a Murderer”

Find out everything there is to know so far about Netflix’s much hyped new documentary series The Keepers.

Crime documentary fans have been posting across social media about their delight that Netflix is to release an unexpected but highly welcomed new crime documentary series – The Keepers.

Being hailed as the new “Making a Murderer” there’s little doubt that this show will be a huge hit.

But just what is The Keepers about? Here’s everything we know so far about Netflix’s latest nonfiction series.

What is The Keepers?

The Keepers is a brand new seven-part Netflix series which will examine the various mysteries and potential cover-ups surrounding the disappearance and murder of 26-year-old nun Sister Cathy Cesnik in Baltimore, Maryland in 1969.

Much like Netflix’s hit 2016 crime nonfiction series Making a Murderer, The Keepers aims to take a hard look at what really happened – regardless of official police reports - and explore all angles, including possible cover-ups by the Baltimore police and the local Catholic Church and community.

The series is directed by esteemed documentary maker Ryan White (The Case Against 8, Serena, Good Ol’ Freda) - Netflix states in its official press release that “White pieces together a story that goes beyond the death of a beloved Catholic schoolteacher to encompass clergy abuse, repressed memories and government and religious institutions that he says 'at best, dropped the ball over the last 45 years – and, at worst, covered it up.'”

What happened to Sister Cathy?

Sister Cathy Cesnik was born in 1942. Little is known about her childhood and teen years, but in her early twenties she became a nun and a teacher of English and drama at an all-girl Catholic school called Archbishop Keough High School in Baltimore, Maryland, USA.

She is remembered as being a beloved and popular teacher, whose kindness encouraged many of her students to confide in her.

On November 7 1969 she went missing; two months later on January 3 her body was discovered in a garbage dump in the town of Lansdowne, Maryland.

No one was ever charged for her murder, and the case remains unsolved.

Why was Sister Cathy murdered?

Cathy’s murder case was never solved but there are many rumours and much speculation on why the young nun’s life was taken.

The case was reopened in the 90s by the Baltimore Police in response to pressure from Kathy’s surviving family members, students and friends. They claim that throughout the 60s priests, teachers and other members of staff at Archbishop Keough High School molested, raped, tortured and bullied many of its female students.

Apparently Sister Kathy was aware of the abuse and not only encouraged her students to confide in her but also threatened to expose the school’s wrongdoings to local authorities.

They fear that her murder was an “inside job” on behalf of the school and ultimately a massive cover-up of various injustices carried out within it.

What really happened to Sister Cathy? At this point we don’t know, but her surviving family members, friends and former students hope that The Keepers will shed some new light on why this poor teacher’s life was taken.

When is The Keepers on Netflix?

The Keepers will be available on Friday May 19. Each of the seven episodes will be available to watch from this day.
