New for August
Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later – available to stream from August 4
Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later is the sequel to both cult favourite film 2001 Wet Hot American Summer and the Netflix spinoff series Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp.
Continuing with the parody theme of classic teen movies, this reunion series sees the original cast meet up 10 years later and features a host of hilarious new characters as well. Stars include Amy Poehler, Beth Dover, Chris Meloni, Chris Pine, David Hyde Pierce, Dax Shepard, Alyssa Milano and Adam Scott.
Marvel’s The Defenders – available to stream from August 18
An original Netflix series based on the Marvel Superhero Comics superhero team of the same, Marvel’s The Defenders is bound to be a huge hit. Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Daredevil and Iron Fist unite together to save New York City from various enemies. If you’re a comic geek or simply a fan of the superhero movie genre, you’re going to want to check this one out.
The Mist - available to stream from August 25
Based on Stephen King’s 1980 bestselling book The Mist, this first run in the UK series follows the tale of a small-town family which has recently been torn apart thanks to a shocking crime. As a dangerous mist arrives, the family must make amends for survival, but can they? Stars include Morgan Spector, Alyssa Sutherland, Gus Birney, Isiah Washington and Frances Conroy.
Icarus – available to stream from August 4
Playwright-turned-screenwriter Bryan Fogel examines doping in sports in the documentary film Icarus. After the sporting world was shocked by Lance Armstrong’s confession that he had taken performance enhancing drugs – despite passing 500 drug tests – Fogel sets out to see for himself how these drugs can avoid the testers.
He begins to take performance enhancing drugs with the plan to undergo a series of drug tests in preparation for a French race. However, a chance meeting with a Russian scientist takes us down an unexpected rabbit hole of the Russian underworld of drug doping.
Maz Jobrani: Immigrant – available to stream from August
The bestselling author of I’m not a Terrorist, But I’ve Played One on TV takes his life story to the stage as he hilariously retells what it was like growing up as an Iranian immigrant in America, shares his take and experience of the LGBTQ community and US politics and more.
Brad Paisley's Comedy Rodeo – available to stream from August 15
Country superstar Brad Paisley hosts his first exclusive to Netflix Comedy Rodeo featuring comedians Nate Bargatze, John Heffron, Sarah Tiana, Mike E. Winfield and Jon Reep. With a guest appearance from David Hasselhoff, this comedy special is a must for any country music and American redneck humour fans.
Lynne Koplitz: Hormonal Beast – available to stream from August 22
Offering compassion and humour to eccentric and childless people, proud lifelong singleton Lynne Koplitz presents her one-woman show Hormonal Beast. Discussing everything from going through the dreaded menopause to life as a middle-aged bachelorette, Lynne performs to a sold-out theatre at the famous Kaye Playhouse in New York City.
Ryan Hamilton: Happy Face – available to stream from August 29
Ryan Hamilton enjoyed a sheltered upbringing in rural Idaho and now lives full-time in New York City trying to make it as a professional comedian. In this stand-up special, Ryan tells of his various adventures in the Big Apple and what it’s been like going from a small town boy to a comedy circuit darling.
Naked – available to stream from August 11
A remake of the 2000 Swedish film Naken, Naked stars Marlon Wayans as Rob Anderson, a man who despite being in love can’t quite make it down the aisle with his fiancé. He finds himself stuck in a time loop, naked in an elevator on his wedding day. Can he break the loop and get to the altar in time? A unique take on wedding day jitters, Naked also stars Regina Hall, Scott Foley and Loretta Devine.
Death Note – available to stream from August 25
A high school student finds a darkly magical notebook in which if you write down a person’s name and imagine their face – they will shortly die. Empowered by this fatal tool, he begins to kill people he believes are unworthy of life. Based on the Japanese Manga written by Tsugami Ohba and Takeshi Obata, Death Note promises to be a thrilling horror.
Voltron: Legendary Defender series 3 – available to stream from August 3
This Netflix original cartoon series reimagines 1980s cult favourite Voltron. Five teenagers find themselves in space and pilots of robotic lions that they must use to fight off evil. In season three, Shiro’s whereabouts is still unknown, leaving the black lion unpiloted. Can they still succeed? Or will Prince Lotor win once and for all?
