What channel is Poldark on?
Poldark is one of BBC One’s flagship shows.
What is Poldark about?
*Warning: Spoilers below
Poldark is based on a 12-book series of historical novels by Winston Graham detailing the travails and adventures of Ross Poldark after his return to Cornwall in the 18th century. The first two series were based on the first four books of the cycle and saw Ross Poldark return to his native Cornwall after spending time abroad in the army to avoid smuggling charges.
His return is anything but auspicious. He finds his family and estate in ruins, his first love believing he’s dead and engaged not just to another man but to his own cousin, Francis. He faces a struggle to get his mines back and re-establish himself in the community. Along the way he falls for Demelza, the miner’s daughter who becomes his wife. Two series of feuds, tribulations, adventures and love affairs ensue.
What can we expect from series three?
The end of series two saw a passionate reunion between Ross and Demelza. Despite all the economic and emotional trials and tribulations he faced over the series, Ross Poldark somehow managed to pull himself together.
While he may have managed to plaster over the cracks of his crumbling marriage with Demelza, their future together seems questionable given his ex-fiancée Elizabeth could very well be pregnant with his child.
Series three is based on The Black Moon and The Four Swans, which are the fifth and sixth books of Winston Graham’s series.
Debbie Horsfield, Poldark screenwriter, gave a glimpse of what we can expect. “We're thrilled to be kicking off series three with a fantastic array of new characters and a story which scales new heights of conflict, feuding, passion and drama," she said.
"Ross is older but not necessarily wiser, and his recklessness sometimes costs him, and his loved ones, dear. We're in for a rollercoaster ride where the stakes have never been higher."
Who is in the cast?
Ross Poldark is played by Aidan Turner, while Eleanor Tomlinson will return as Demelza – Poldark’s wife. Heida Reed will be back as Ross’s first love, Elizabeth, and Jack Farthing returns as her new husband – and Ross’s enemy - George Warleggan. A host of other familiar faces will also be back for series three.
Who are the new characters?
Series three introduces several new characters, including Demelza’s brothers, Drake and Sam. Drake is played by Harry Richardson, recently seen in Doctor Thorne, and Sam by Tom York of Olympus fame.
Elizabeth Poldark’s cousin Morwenna will be another new character, played by New Blood’s Ellise Chappell.
How many Poldark episodes are there?
Series three will have nine episodes.
Where is Poldark filmed?
Poldark has always been shot on location in Cornwall, where the books are based, in order to capture the savage beauty of the Cornish landscape. Series three is no exception, with some scenes also filmed in a studio and in Bristol.
Drone footage taken during filming showed Aidan Turner riding across the Cornish cliffs.
Episode 4 spoilers:
A grain ship is raided by starving villagers and George sentences the peasants harshly. Demelza gives birth to a daughter, Clowance, and George decides to host a Christmas party to court the gentry.
Drake arrives at Trenwith with toads for Geoffrey Charles and flowers for Morwenna, and Caroline learns that the admiralty is arranging the release of the British officers - but Ross is not convinced. He laments the loss of Wheal Leisure to George, seeing miners broken by the terms of their labour.
Morwenna and Geoffrey Charles are to spend Christmas in Truro and Drake and Morwenna almost kiss before Geoffrey Charles interrupts. Demelza cautions Morwenna against a relationship with Drake while, in Quimper, Armitage assists Dwight in treating prisoners. Ross decides to fetch Agatha to the christening party and finds his aunt neglected.
