Doctor Foster, the gripping BBC relationship drama which became a huge hit in 2015, is back for a second series.
Starring former Coronation Street actress Suranne Jones, the five-part sequel continues the story of GP Gemma Foster, whose world was split apart after she discovered the infidelity of her husband Simon (Bertie Carvel).
The show takes place in the fictional town of Parminster – but where is it actually filmed, and what can we expect from the new series?
Which real life locations stand in for Doctor Foster's Parminster?
As in the first series, the town of Hitchin in Hertfordshire stands in for the fictional locale of Parminster.
In September 2016, signs were put up around the Hitchin town centre alerting residents that camera crews would be disrupting traffic, and Town Centre Manager Keith Hoskins told the Hertfordshire Mercury that it was the second series of Doctor Foster being filmed.
"This is the second series and they didn't cause a lot of disruption during the filming the first series. In fact they cause a lot of interest and excitement from people. It is very good."
The town’s Market Place is the real location for The Courtyard in Parminster, while Jones’ character can be seen leaving a Hitchin nightclub early in the series.
What should I know about Hitchin?
There has been a settlement in the area since at least the 7th century, but the name Hitchin was first referred to in the 17th century, at which time it began to flourish as a staging post on the way to London, and for its wool trade.
Hitchin’s St Mary’s Church, whose tower dates back to 1190, is the largest parish church in Hertfordshire, while the town’s Market Place is surrounded by buildings dating back to the 1400s.
In March 2013 a poll in The Times named Hitchin the ninth best UK town to live in. There are numerous green spaces and a bustling town centre with plenty of independent stores and restaurants.
Is Doctor Foster filmed anywhere else?
Filming for the second series also occurred in St Albans. According to the Herts Advertiser, shooting took place in Adelaide Street and around the Bar Meze in the town’s centre.
As in the first series, the Chess Medical Centre in Chesham, Buckinghamshire stood in for Gemma Foster’s workplace, Parminster Medical Centre.
Other locations used for the show’s first series included Green Lane in Croxley Green, Hertfordshire, Copse Wood Way in Northwood, London, and the town of Enfield.
