What role is Angel Coulby best known for?

In 2008 Coulby began playing the role she is probably best known for – the character of Guinevere or ‘Gwen’ in the BBC series Merlin. The show ran for 65 episodes over five years.

“It's a story that has really stood the test of time,” she said of the show, which was based on Arthurian legend.

“It's full of intrigue, magic and fantasy… you can lose yourself in a magical world because it's so different from the world we normally live in.

“Also, as a writer, you can go anywhere and do anything. It's exciting to be able to venture beyond the realms of everyday life. Immersing yourself in that is a very attractive prospect. Viewers love a bit of escapism.”

What has Angel Coulby been in more recently?

In 2013 she appeared alongside Chiwetel Ejiofor in Stephen Poliakoff’s Dancing on the Edge, about the experiences of a black jazz band in London in the 1930s.

She played a regular role in all three series of The Tunnel, an Anglo-French adaptation of the Scandinavian crime drama The Bridge, which was shown in the UK on Sky Atlantic. She’s also provided the voice of Kayo for the rebooted Thunderbirds Are Go animation series.

What else should I know about Angel Coulby?

She has revealed that she decided to become an actress at the age of six, when she went to see a show which had several girls of her age in the cast. “I found myself wishing it was me up there,” she said.

Her favourite piece of acting is Meryl Streep’s performance in the film Sophie’s Choice. “She plays Sophie with such strength,” says Coulby, “but also with a tenderness and a lightness of touch that just totally blows you away. It’s heart-breaking and utterly brilliant.”

When she’s not performing, she says she likes to “cook, eat, make clothes sometimes, socialise, do voiceovers, go to auditions, try to make the most of life in general”.  She says that her ambition is to perform in a play on Broadway in New York.
