Who is David James? Meet the Strictly Come Dancing 2019 contestant and footballer

The class of 2019 is being revealed – find out more about one of this year’s amateur dancers.

It’s that time of year again – Strictly Come Dancing’s celebrity cast for the coming series is being announced.

Find out more about one of the Glitterball Trophy contenders, David James.

Revealed as a Strictly contestant: David was the first contestant of the 2019 series to be revealed when he appeared on The One Show on July 31.

Age: 49

Occupation: Former footballer

Best known for: David was the number one choice goalkeeper for the England team, picked first for Euro 2004 and the 2010 World Cup, and boasting 53 caps for his country.

David’s other clubs have included Aston Villa, West Ham, Manchester City, and Watford.

He also holds the Premier League record for the most clean sheets, at 173.

Since retiring in 2013, David has worked as a pundit for the BBC and BT Sport, and outside of football has worked as a model for Giorgio Armani and H&M, is a keen artist, and illustrated the children’s book Harry’s Magic Pockets: The Circus.

In 2012, David was awarded an MBE for his services to football and charity.

He said: "I'm really excited to be on Strictly this year. Not just competing against this year's stars, but being compared to previous sport stars from previous Strictly seasons. I have some big shoes to fill, #LetsGetLive."
