Coronation Street's Julie Hesmondhalgh has revealed she is giving away Hayley Cropper's famous red anorak when she leaves the soap.

The actress has made the tough decision to leave the soap after 15 years, and Hayley has been diagnosed with terminal cancer as bosses struggled to find the most fitting way to write such beloved character out of the show.

Hayley has worn her frumpy red anorak since she first arrived on the cobbles, and now Julie is planning to auction it off for charity when she leaves.

"I'm auctioning it off for the Meningitis Trust, in memory of a good friend of mine, Alex Williams, who was a young ambassador," she told the Daily Mirror.

But the 43-year-old actress has vowed to keep in touch with all the pen pals she has made since she took the role of transgender Hayley 15 years ago.

She revealed: "I've made quite a few pen pals, all over the country and I will stay in touch with them, and keep on writing to them, after I leave.

"I handwrite everything and I've got a dressing room full of special letters and photos collected over the years.

"I've been a little bit more relaxed about them lately but I'll have to find a place to put them all. I can't bear to throw them away."
