Corrie actress Julie Hesmondhalgh has admitted she struggled to watch the moment in which her character Hayley Cropper takes her own life.
The much-loved Weatherfield resident is set to commit suicide in the face of incurable pancreatic cancer across two episodes next Monday - leaving husband Roy devastated.
Julie, who has played transgender Hayley for 16 years, told BT.com she watched a preview of the scenes alongside her husband with "a big roll of kitchen roll and a bottle of whiskey".
She added: "We just sort of sat and sobbed our way through it... but I felt very proud of it."
Co-star Jennie McAlpine, who plays Hayley's friend Fiz Stape, added: "Hayley will definitely go down in history as a memorable character. She will definitely be one of the icons."
Catch Hayley's final episodes on ITV on Monday January 20 at 7.30pm and 8.30pm.
