What to watch in December 2019

Premier League

When is it on?

Premier League fixtures kick off from Tuesday, December 3 on Prime Video.

What’s it about?

On December 3, 4 and 5, all the midweek Premier League action is exclusive to Prime Video. It also has all the festive fixtures on Boxing Day and December 27.

Why watch it?

It’s going to be a December to remember in the Premier League, as Prime Video have 20 exclusive matches for the first time.

Vikings season 6

When is it on?

Vikings season 6 returns to Prime Video on Thursday, December 5, with new episodes added weekly.

What’s it about?

Vikings follows the adventures of Ragnar Lothbrok the greatest hero of his age. The series tells the sages of Ragnar's band of Viking brothers and his family, as he rises to become King of the Viking tribes. 

As well as being a fearless warrior, Ragnar embodies the Norse traditions of devotion to the gods, legend has it that he was a direct descendent of Odin, the god of war and warriors. 

Why watch it?

It was confirmed earlier this year that the sixth season would be Vikings’ final season.

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel season 3

When is it on?

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 3 premieres on Prime Video on Friday, December 6.

What’s it about?

In season 3, Midge and Susie discover that life on tour with Shy is glamorous but humbling, and they learn a lesson about show business they’ll never forget. Joel struggles to support Midge while pursuing his own dreams. Abe embraces a new mission and Rose learns she has talents of her own.

Why watch it?

Following its December 2018 release, we named The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel “the most important TV show right now”.

New Amsterdam season 2

New Amsterdam season 2 returns to Prime Video on Monday, December 9, with episodes 1-9. 

What’s it about?

Inspired by the oldest public hospital in America, New Amsterdam is a unique medical drama that follows the brilliant and charming Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold, BlackkKlansman), the institution’s newest medical director who sets out to tear up the bureaucracy and provide exceptional care. 

Dr. Goodwin must disrupt the status quo and prove he will stop at nothing to breathe new life into this understaffed, underfunded and underappreciated hospital and return it to the glory that put it on the map. 

Why watch it?

New Amsterdam stood out from the crowded field of medical dramas to become a major hit when it launched on NBC in 2018, before premiering on Amazon Prime Video in the UK earlier this year.

Four Weddings and a Funeral

When is it on?

TV series Four Weddings and a Funeral premieres Thursday, December 12 on Amazon Prime Video via Starzplay.

What’s it about?

The show follows Maya (Natalie Emmanuel), a young communications director for a New York senatorial campaign, who leaves her professional and personal life behind when she receives a wedding invitation from her college schoolmate now living in London. 

Traveling to England she reconnects with her old friends and ends up in the midst of their personal crises. Relationships are forged and broken, political scandals exposed, London social life lampooned, love affairs ignited and doused, and of course, there are four weddings… and a funeral.

Why watch it?

The 10-episode series has been adapted for television by Mindy Kaling (The Office, The Mindy Project).

The Grand Tour presents: Seamen

The Grand Tour presents: Seamen is released in over 200 countries on Prime Video on Friday, December 13.

What’s it about?

The Grand Tour is back and it's cheekier than ever. Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond are heading out on their saltiest adventure yet - The Grand Tour presents: Seamen.

Why watch it?

This is an epic 'road trip' journey across Vietnam and Cambodia, with one slight difference. There are no roads or cars, only boats, as their adventure-packed voyage takes them along one of the world’s most iconic waterways - the Mekong Delta. 

The Expanse season 4

THE EXPANSE

When is it on?

The Expanse season 4 arrives on Prime Video on Friday, December 13.

What’s it about?

Based on novels by James S. A. Corey, The Expanse is a critically-acclaimed, award-winning political science fiction series set hundreds of years in the future. 

Humans have colonised the solar system with The United Nations controlling Earth and an independent military power inhabiting Mars. 

Desperate for air and water, the series begins with Earth and Mars on the verge of war over the resources found in the Asteroid Belt. With few options for survival, allies struggle to fight over the future of humanity...

The Expanse is co-created and written by Oscar nominees Mark Fergus (Iron Man) and Hawk Otsby (Children of Men).

Star Trek: Picard

Star Trek: Picard will premiere on Prime Video on Friday, January 24 2020.

What’s it about?

Sir Patrick Stewart will reprise his famous role as Jean-Luc Picard, which he played for seven seasons in Star Trek: Next Generation, telling the story of the next chapter in the captain’s life.

Alongside Stewart, the series will also star Alison Pill (The Newsroom), Harry Treadaway (Penny Dreadful), Isa Briones (American Crime Story: Versace), Santiago Cabrera (Salvation), Evan Evagora, and Michelle Hurd (Blindspot).

Outlander season 5

Outlander season 5 is coming to Prime Video in autumn 2019.

What’s it about?

Outlander follows the adventures of English nurse Claire Randall, who travels back in time from 1940s Scotland to the 18th century, where she meets and falls in love with Highlander Jamie Fraser, played by Heughan.

Why watch it?

Season 5 of Outlander will play out over twelve episodes, based on material from The Fiery Cross, the fifth of eight books in Diana Gabaldon’s international best-selling Outlander series.

Rob Delaney's stand-up special is thought to premiere on Prime Video later in 2019. A release date has not yet been announced.

What’s it about?

Delaney follows a raft of top British comedians including Chris Ramsey and Ed Gamble in launching Amazon stand-up specials.

Delaney created the hit Channel 4 / Amazon comedy series Catastrophe with Sharon Horgan.

Utopia

When is it on?

The series is currently in pre-production and is thought to be due for release sometime in 2019.

What’s it about?

Utopia is a nine-episode series from award-winning Gillian Flynn, based on the British series of the same name written by Dennis Kelly.

A group of young adults who meet online are mercilessly hunted by a shadowy deep state organisation after they come into possession of a near mythical, cult, underground graphic novel.

They discover the conspiracy theories in the comic’s pages may actually be real and are forced in to the dangerous, unique and ironic position of saving the world.

“We are huge fans of Gillian Flynn’s electrifying work,” said Nick Hall, Head of Alternative Series for Amazon Studios.

“She crafts stories that hold her audience in a constant state of suspense and subverts the expectations behind her characters. She will deliver Prime Video members a series they won’t forget, and Utopia’s relevance is sure to connect with viewers around the globe.”

Of the partnership, Gillian says: “Utopia is pure creative catnip to me. Dennis Kelly’s show blew my mind, and he has been so incredibly generous in letting me crack open his world and play around in it and make it my own weird, wild place.

Gillian Flynn is the best-selling author and screenwriter of Golden Globe-nominated film Gone Girl and HBO’s Sharp Objects - one of the most talked about TV series of 2018.

Eco-Challenge

Bear Grylls Eco Challenge

When is it on?

The show is expected to debut on Prime Video in 2019-2020.

What’s it about?

Billed as the next big unscripted series after The Grand Tour, Bear Grylls (above) is set to host the gruelling expedition competition featuring people from around the world facing off against each other and mother nature, in a show produced by MGM Television.

Why watch it?

Eco-Challenge is being labelled as the toughest global outdoor multi-sport endurance race on Earth.

Homecoming season 2

When is it on?

A release date for the second season of Homecoming hasn’t been confirmed, but DigitalSpy.com reckons it will be released in November 2019.

What’s it about?

Heidi Bergman (Julia Roberts) is a caseworker at Homecoming, a Geist Group facility helping soldiers transition to civilian life.

Years later she has started a new life, living with her mother and working as a waitress, when a Department of Defense auditor questions why she left the Homecoming facility.

Heidi quickly realises that there's a whole other story behind the story she's been telling herself.

The plot for series 2 is thought to deviate from the second half of the Gimlet Media podcast on which it was based.

Why watch it?

Despite not returning to Homecoming as its lead star, Julia Roberts, above, will remain on the show as an executive producer alongside series 1 director, Sam Esmail.

Our Man in… Japan

When is it on?

A release date for James May’s solo TV show has not been confirmed, but it started filming in March 2019.

What’s it about?

Fifteen years after James May first visited Japan as a baffled tourist, he embarks on a quest to understand the unique, extraordinary and complex country.

James will embark on an epic journey across all of Japan from North to South, determined to understand why this unique land and its people are the way they are, what drives their whole culture and what their approach to life can teach the rest of us.

Why watch it?

Our Man in… Japan is the service's first spin-off show featuring one of the three Grand Tour presenters since they left the BBC for Amazon Prime.

Making The Cut

What’s it about?

Project Runway co-hosts Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn (above) are teaming up for a global fashion TV competition series for Amazon, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Amazon says the series will make fashion accessible to a wide and global audience.

Why watch it?

Judges and guest judges on the show include Naomi Campbell, Nicole Richie, Joseph Altuzarra and Carine Roitfeld.

Hanna season 2

When is it on?

The second season of Hanna will premiere on Prime Video in 2020.

What’s it about?

In the first season, 15-year-old Hanna (Esmé Creed-Miles, Mister Lonely), who was raised in total seclusion in the remote woods of Eastern Europe, has spent her entire young life training to fight those who hunt her and her mercenary father, Erik Heller (Joel Kinnaman, The Killing).

Her survivalist skills are finally tested when she and Erik are separated upon their discovery by a rogue CIA operative, Marissa Wiegler (Mireille Enos, The Killing) and her team of agents.

Hanna has no choice but to embark on a perilous journey alone across Europe as she seeks to reunite with her father and evade and ultimately take down - the dangerous agents who target them.

The plot for season 2 has not yet been revealed.

Why watch it?

The second season of Hanna is will take viewers into a “whole new imaginative world” and “explore fresh terrain” for Hanna, according to its writer David Farr.

The Boys season 2

The Boys season 2 is expected to be released on Amazon in summer 2020.

What’s it about?

The Boys is an irreverent take on what happens when superheroes, who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians and as revered as Gods, abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. 

It's the powerless against the super powerful as The Boys embark on a heroic quest to expose the truth about "The Seven", and their formidable Vought backing.

The plot for season 2 has not been announced.

Amazon revealed in August 2019 that The Boys has become one of its most watched TV series ever.

Truth Seekers

A release date for Truth Seekers on Amazon has not yet been confirmed.

What’s it about?

Starring Nick Frost as Gus and Simon Pegg as Dave, Truth Seekers is a horror comedy series about a team of part-time paranormal investigators who team up to uncover and film ghost sightings across the UK, sharing their adventures on an online channel for all to see.

Why watch it?

Set in a mysterious world filled with dread and just-out-of-sight monsters, Truth Seekers mixes the very funny with the very scary in an exciting take on genre storytelling from the minds that gave us Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.

Lord Of The Rings TV series

Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios (above), has said that ‘2021 is the hope’ in terms of a Prime Video release but there are other people who ‘wish it was 2020’, so we shall have to keep our fingers crossed on that one.

What’s it about?

Based on the celebrated fantasy novels by J.R.R. Tolkien, the multi-season series will be produced by Amazon Studios in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line Cinema - a division of Warner Bros. Entertainment.

“The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen,” said Sharon Tal Yguado, Head of Scripted Series, Amazon Studios.

“We are thrilled to be taking The Lord of the Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.”

Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins, said: “We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings.

“Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings.”

Peter Jackson's three-part movie adaptation of the world-renowned literary work earned a combined gross of nearly $6 billion worldwide, garnering a combined 17 Academy Awards including Best Picture for the final instalment, The Return of the King.

Why watch it?

The television adaptation will explore new storylines preceding the first part of the book, The Fellowship of the Ring. Plus, it was announced in July 2019 that J.A. Bayona (The Orphanage, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, The Impossible) has been hired to direct the opening block of episodes.

The Underground Railroad

When is it on?

The series is currently in pre-production and a release date has yet to be confirmed.

What’s it about?

Barry Jenkins (Moonlight, above) will direct all episodes of the highly anticipated adaptation of The Underground Railroad.

Based on Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Underground Railroad won the National Book Award and was an Oprah Winfrey Book Club pick.

The book is about Cora, a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia. Life is hell for all the slaves, but especially bad for Cora; an outcast even among her fellow Africans, she is coming into womanhood - where even greater pain awaits. When Caesar, a recent arrival from Virginia, tells her about the Underground Railroad, they decide to take a terrifying risk and escape.

Why watch it?

Barry Jenkins won an Oscar and two Golden Globes for his work on the 2016 movie Moonlight.

The Wheel of Time

The Wheel of Time

When is it on?

The series is currently in pre-production and a release date has yet to be confirmed. Filming is thought to commence in Prague, Czech Republic in September 2019.

What’s it about?

Robert Jordan's bestselling novels The Wheel of Time - set in an epic world where magic exists, but only women can use it - will be adapted into a female-led action fantasy series by Amazon and Sony.

Why watch it?

The Wheel of Time has had a long journey to get produced - the book was published 28 years ago, with NBC first optioning the rights in 2000. The Amazon epic is being adapted and exec produced by Rafe Judkins (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.)

Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) was cast in the lead role of Moiraine in June 2019.

The Hunt

When is it on?

A release date for The Hunt has yet to be announced.

What’s it about?

Jordan Peele (above), the Oscar and Emmy Award winning writer-director of Get Out, signed a first-look deal with Amazon, with The Hunt the second project in production after Lorena.

The Hunt is a drama about a group of Nazi hunters in the 1970s who seek out justice on their own terms.

An extended description on Deadline.com reveals that The Hunters, as they’re known, have discovered that hundreds of high ranking Nazi officials are living among them and conspiring to create a Fourth Reich in the U.S.

The eclectic team of Hunters will set out on a bloody quest to bring the Nazis to justice and thwart their new genocidal plans.

Why watch it?

US actor Logan Lerman (Noah, Fury) is in talks for a lead role in the series, playing the character of Jonah Heidelbaum.

The Expatriates

Nicole Kidman

When is it on?

Drama series The Expatriates was announced in 2018, but a release date has yet to be revealed.

What’s it about?

Oscar, Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winner, Nicole Kidman (above) and her production company, Blossom Films, are making original series that will be available exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.

The Expatriates, an adaptation of the book by Janice Y. K. Lee, marks the first project under Kidman’s deal with Amazon Studios to get a green light, reports Deadline.com.

Kidman is being lined up to star in the drama series, which explores the personal and professional lives of a tight-knit group of expatriates living in Hong Kong.

“After announcing our recent first look deal with Nicole and Blossom Films, we are thrilled to kick off this relationship by bringing this very popular novel from author Janice Y.K. Lee to Prime Video,” said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios.

“The story weaves an addictive tapestry that follows a group of complex women and their lives as outsiders in Hong Kong. It’s a compelling exploration of the strength of these women as they persevere through struggles with marriage, career, parenting and unimaginable loss.”

Why watch it?

Blossom Films, created by Nicole Kidman and Per Saari, executive-produced the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning limited series, Big Little Lies, for HBO.

The Power

The Power

When is it on?

There’s currently no release date for the 10-part TV adaptation of The Power, which was greenlit in February 2019.

What’s it about?

The Power is based on the 2017 novel by Naomi Alderman, pictured above. The thriller takes place in a world where teenage girls suddenly develop the ability to electrocute people at will.

Why watch it?

Amazon has enlisted producers from The Handmaid's Tale and Broadchurch for a series that gives new meaning to "girl power”, according to HollywoodReporter.com.

Good People

When is it on?

Good People was announced in May 2019 by The Hollywood Reporter. It doesn’t have a release date on Amazon yet.

What’s it about?

Comedy pilot Good People is set in a college ombudsman's office, where three generations of women working there "navigate the current cultural climate, the concept of feminism across different generations and the struggle to reconcile socially constructed ideas with current ethical views regarding complex issues such as sex, race, class and gender.”

Why watch it?

Emmy-winning actress Lisa Kudrow (Friends, above) has signed on to star in the series, as well as serving as an executive producer alongside creators Lee Daniels and Whitney Cummings.

Upload

When is it on?

Upload doesn’t have a release date on Amazon yet. A full series order was announced in July 2018.

What’s it about?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Upload is a sitcom that takes place in the near future, where people who are near death can be "uploaded" into a virtual afterlife of their choice.

Set in 2033, the secretly romantic Brooklyn-born Nora (Andy Allo, Pitch Perfect 3) works in customer service for a luxurious virtual reality environment.

When handsome L.A. party boy Nathan’s (Robbie Amell, The DUFF) self-driving car crashes, his high-maintenance girlfriend uploads him permanently into Nora’s VR world.

Why watch it?

The sci-fi romantic satire has been written and created by Greg Daniels (The Office).

Untitled Conan the Barbarian TV series

Conan the Barbarian

When is it on?

It’s currently in development, but release dates have not been announced.

What’s it about?

Amazon is developing a Conan the Barbarian TV series, based on the books by Robert E. Howard, according to Deadline.com. Game of Thrones director Miguel Sapochnik (above) is involved in the project, alongside The Handmaid’s Tale and Fargo executive producer Warren Littlefield.

Why watch it?

Expect a big-budget blockbuster TV show as Amazon hopes to fill the fantasy void that Game of Thrones will leave following its 2019 conclusion.

Neil Gaiman untitled projects

Neil Gaiman

When is it on?

Release dates have yet to be announced.

What’s it about?

Neil Gaiman (above) will exclusively work with Amazon Studios on the creation of television series which will premiere globally on Amazon Prime Video in over 200 countries and territories. 

Why watch it?

Gaiman is the creator of Good Omens and American Gods.

Blake Lively untitled fashion project

Blake Lively

When is it on?

A release date has yet to be announced.

What’s it about?

Blake Lively (above) is in talks with Amazon Studios for a scripted TV series with a fashion theme, according to the Hollywood Reporter. It will have a merchandising component that will take advantage of Amazon’s e-tailer foundation.

Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke said of working with Lively: “She’s a force of nature: ambitious, smart and talented.”

Why watch it?

If there’s anyone we’d want to see create a fashion TV show, it’s Lively - she’s known for her killer red carpet and off-duty style.

Rachel Brosnahan untitled projects

When is it on?

It was announced in June 2019 that Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) will develop TV series exclusively for Amazon. Release dates for these projects have not yet been announced.

What’s it about?

Projects are being kept under wraps at this point, but Brosnahan is set to produce and star in the Amazon Studios film, I’m Your Woman, slated for a 2020 release.

Why watch it?

Brosnahan has won several awards for her performance as Midge Maisel, including an Emmy Award and two Golden Globes. 

Untitled Russo Brothers series

The as-yet-untitled project from the Russo Brothers does not have a release date, but it was revealed in July 2018.

What’s it about?

Amazon is teaming with Joe and Anthony Russo to develop what it described as an "ambitious concept" meant to captivate its Prime Video audience and "redefine the boundaries of storytelling”, according to HollywoodReporter.com.

Why watch it?

The Russo Brothers are the directors of smash-hit Marvel films including Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
