She’s already had a huge Netflix hit on her hands with Ozark, and now the streaming service will be hoping that Laura Linney can work her magic once more with its new show, Tales of the City.
It’s inspired by Armistead Maupin’s novels which it is bringing to life with an all-star cast. Here’s all you need to know about the series.
When does Tales of the City begin on Netflix?
The series is set to launch in the summer, with Netflix announcing a streaming date of Friday, June 7.
What is it about?
If you’re familiar with the books of Armistead Maupin, Tales of the City isn’t a direct adaptation of them – it’s inspired by the work but is a new chapter in the story.
The nine novels were published between 1978 and 2014 and are all set at 28 Barbary Lane, a San Francisco address that sees a fascinating cast of tenants passing through it.
In the first novel, Mary Ann Singleton arrives in the city from Cleveland, Ohio as a naïve young woman on holiday.
She soon decides to put down permanent roots and moved into an apartment at 28 Barbary Lane, presided over by the eccentric, marijuana-growing landlady Anna Madrigal.
Mary Ann’s friendships with the other tenants living in the other apartments were the basis of the 'Tales' and followed many of them over the course of decades.
The novels saw one of the first literary references to the AIDS epidemic, and detailed the city’s famous LGBT scene through the residents of Barbary Lane.
Netflix’s new series sees Mary Ann return to San Francisco 20 years after leaving her daughter and ex-husband behind to pursue her career.
Her picture-perfect life in Connecticut has led her to a mid-life crisis and she feels herself drawn back to the city that first felt like home – and to Barbary Lane.
She finds herself back in the orbit of Anna Madrigal, and a whole new generation of young residents at her old address who are exploring the LGBT world of San Francisco.
Is there a trailer?
There is, and it gives a preview of the beautifully-shot series as well as its star-filled cast.
Here's your first look at what is coming to Netflix in June.

She’s joined by Ellen Page (Juno, X-Men, The Umbrella Academy) as her daughter Shawna, and Paul Gross (Alias Grace, Due South) as her ex-husband Brian.
Of course, Anna Madrigal is back for the new story, too, and will be played by Moonstruck and Steel Magnolias star Olympia Dukakis.
