Step away from your Facebook feed – Netflix documentary The Great Hack is about to make you view your social media use in a completely new light.
The shocking film will show you how everything you share about yourself online could be used against you. Here’s all you need to know.
When is The Great Hack on TV?
The Great Hack is a Netflix documentary film, although it will have a limited cinema release, too.
It will be streaming on Netflix from Wednesday, July 24.
What is The Great Hack about?
Privacy and social media has become a huge story in recent years, thanks in large part to the Cambridge Analytica scandal of 2018.
The now-defunct political consulting firm combined data mining and analysis with strategic communications during elections.
The company's downfall came when it was discovered to have bought data from a third party who in turn had collected it from Facebook, claiming it was for academic purposes. The data was then used to influence Donald Trump's presidential campaign and the Brexit referendum.
The Great Hack looks into the murky world of data trading and exploitation, and examines what happened at Cambridge Analytica and Facebook in much greater detail.
It will feature key players from all sides of the scandal, show footage from the enquiry and examine the terrifying impact it has had on former employees who acted as whistleblowers.
With data now considered more valuable than oil, it’ll certainly make you think about what you choose to share on social media and how you’re influenced by modern election campaigning.
What else have the filmmakers worked on?
Academy Award nominees Karim Amer and Jehane Noujaim have made a name for themselves in focusing on tech issues.
They were shortlisted for an Oscar for their 2013 documentary The Square, about the Egyptian revolution of 2011.
Noujaim was the producer on acclaimed documentaries Control Room, about Al Jazeera’s coverage of the US war with Iraq, and Startup.com, which followed the birth and failure of new media company govWorks.com.
The Great Hack begins streaming on Netflix on Wednesday, July 24.
