Homecoming season 1

When is it on?

Homecoming season 1 will premiere on Prime Video on Friday, November 2. A second season has been confirmed by Amazon.

What’s it about?

Homecoming is a mind-bending psychological thriller starring Julia Roberts, alongside Sissy Spacek, Bobby Cannavale and Stephan James, based on the acclaimed fictional podcast series of the same name by Gimlet Media.

Roberts stars as Heidi Bergman, a caseworker at the Homecoming Transitional Support Center, a Geist Group facility helping soldiers transition back to civilian life. Walter Cruz (Stephan James) is one of these soldiers, eager to begin the next phase of his life.

Overseeing Heidi and the facility is Colin Belfast (Bobby Cannavale), an ambitious company man whose manic demands point to questionable motives.

Four years later, Heidi has started a new life, living with her mother (Sissy Spacek) and working as a small-town waitress, when a Department of Defense auditor (Shea Whigham) comes to her with questions about why she left the Homecoming facility. Heidi begins to realise that there’s a whole other story behind the tale she’s been telling herself.

The series comes from Sam Esmail - the brains behind the mind-bending, Golden Globe-winning sci-fi drama series, Mr Robot.

Outlander series 4

Outlander S4

When is it on?

The first episode of Outlander series four launches on Monday, November 5, with new episodes available weekly.

What’s it about?

Series four continues the story of time-travelling 20th century doctor, Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe), and her 18th century Highlander husband, Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), as they try to make a home for themselves in colonial America.

We find the Frasers in North Carolina, in a place called Fraser’s Ridge at yet another turning point in history – the cusp of the American Revolution.

As Claire and Jamie build their life together in the rough and dangerous backcountry of North Carolina, they must negotiate a tenuous loyalty to the current British ruling class, despite Claire’s knowledge of the bloody rebellion to come.

Why watch it?

The fantasy drama has been nominated for five Golden Globes.

Patriot season 2

Patriot

When is it on?

Patriot season 2 is available to stream on Prime Video from Friday, November 9.

What’s it about?

The comedy series follows a melancholy intelligence officer who works out his issues by writing folk songs.

After barely surviving his Midwestern corporate cover in season one, US intelligence officer John Tavner (Michael Dorman, Wonderland) finds himself without his bag of 11 million euros and no closer to the goal of influencing the presidential election.

As a result, John’s father Tom (Terry O’Quinn, Lost) orders more extreme measures in season two: the assassination of the pro-nuclear candidate in a heavily-guarded Paris compound.

John is the linchpin of a high-stakes covert operation with profound global ramifications, and he’s bringing his mum Bernice (Debra Winger, Terms of Endearment) with him.

Why watch it?

The second season of Patriot is executive produced by show creator Steve Conrad (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty), who also writes and directs on the series.

A Head Full of Dreams film

Head Full of Dreams

When is it on?

A Head Full of Dreams will be available to stream exclusively on Prime Video from Friday, November 16.

What’s it about?

A Head Full of Dreams offers an in-depth and intimate look at Coldplay’s spectacular rise from the backrooms of Camden pubs to selling out stadiums across the planet.

Using extensive unseen archive, behind-the-scenes and live footage, the film - which was recorded during Coldplay's record-breaking A Head Full of Dreams Tour - sees the band reflect upon their two decades together.

At the heart of the story is the band’s unshakeable brotherhood which has endured through many highs and lows.

Why watch it?

The film is helmed by Mat Whitecross, who met the four friends at college in London, before they’d even formed the band. From the very first rehearsal in a cramped student bedroom, Whitecross has been there to capture the music and the relationships on tape.

He’s also directed many of the band’s most iconic videos (including Paradise, A Sky Full of Stars and Adventure of a Lifetime) and continues to document the band’s musical and personal evolution.

Vikings season 5B

Vikings

When is it on?

Vikings will return to the History channel in the US on Wednesday, November 28, before being released on Prime Video the next day - Thursday, November 29. One episode will be released every week for 10 weeks.

What’s it about?

The world of the Vikings is brought to life through the journey of Ragnar Lothbrok, the first Viking to emerge from Norse legend and enter the pages of history, as well as his Viking crew. Later series chronicles his sons' exploits following (spoiler alert) their father’s death.

Why watch it?

The bloody and thrilling drama has been nominated for seven Emmy awards.

Inside Jokes

Inside Jokes

When is it on?

Inside Jokes is available to stream on Prime Video from Friday, November 30.

What’s it about?

The series follows a select group of talented comics in New York and Los Angeles as they go through the process of auditioning for the Montreal Just For Laughs festival.

The series will follow the comedians to comedy clubs, to their jobs, and to their homes, as they struggle to hone their acts which could launch their careers.

The comedians in the running are Rosebud Baker, Robert Dean, Kellen Erskine, Simon Gibson, MK Paulsen, Alzo Slade and Daphnique Springs.

Why watch it?

The Montreal Just For Laughs festival is the comedy festival that Kumail auditioned for in 2017 movie, The Big Sick (which coincidentally, was also produced by Amazon Studios).

There are also a ton of movies coming to Prime Video in November including Storks (November 20), Loving Pablo (November 21) and The Revenant (November 23).

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel season 2

When’s it on?

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel season 2 is available to stream on Prime Video from Wednesday, December 5.

What’s it about?

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel is a comedy drama set in 1958 New York City. It centres around the trials and tribulations of Midge Maisel (House Of Cards’ Rachel Brosnahan), a beautiful Jewish New Yorker who seems to have it all. Living a comfy lifestyle with her husband and kids in their trendy Upper West Side apartment, she embodies the perfect 1950s housewife lifestyle.

But this all changes when her businessman hubby Joel, who moonlights as a struggling stand-up comedian, confesses to Midge that not only has he been having an affair with his secretary – but he’s leaving his family for her.

Devastated Midge goes on a drunken rampage, only to leap onto stage and give stand-up comedy a go. And - would you know - she’s surprisingly good at it, so much so that she begins to consider it as a potential career.

Why watch it?

Created by Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel currently boasts a 96% Rotten Tomatoes approval rating. IndieWire describes the series as having "a much-needed message for our times" with the "appeal of a Mad Men-with-a-feminine-flair production design" and says it's "well on its way to becoming the next obsession for Gilmore Girls devotees".

A critical and popular success, season 1 of the show took home a host of impressive awards including two Golden Globes – Best Television Series (musical or comedy) and Best Actress (television series musical or comedy).

The Grand Tour series 3

The Grand Tour

When is it on?

Filming for series 3 started in March this year in countries including Colombia and Mongolia, ahead of its launch on Prime Video coming soon. Seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream now.

What’s it about?

Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May return for a new season of the world's greatest show about three middle-aged men rampaging around the world having unusual adventures, driving amazing cars, and engaging in a constant argument about which of them is the biggest idiot.

Why watch it?

To see Jeremy Clarkson sporting an elaborate fake moustache and dressed in a traffic warden costume. Plus the banter between the three co-hosts, of course!

American Gods season 2

American Gods

When is it on?

The second series went into production in April 2018, but we have to wait until 2019 for new episodes. Season 1 is available to stream on Prime Video now.

What’s it about?

American Gods is a fantasy drama based on the novel of the same name by British writer Neil Gaiman, starring Ricky Whittle and Ian McShane.

Dean Winters (Divorce, John Wick), Devery Jacobs (Cardinal, This Order) and Kahyun Kim (Shameless, Freaky Friday) have been cast as Mr. Town, Sam Blackcrow and New Media, respectively, in the second series of the critically-acclaimed Prime Original series.

Why watch it?

The bold and original series - nominated for two Emmy awards - isn’t like anything else on TV right now.

Good Omens

Good Omens

When is it on?

Good Omens is coming to Prime Video in 2019.

What’s it about?

Based on the beloved book by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, Good Omens tells the story of a fussy Angel and a loose-living Demon who've become overly fond of life on Earth - and are forced to form an unlikely alliance when the end of the world if coming.

But they’ve lost the Antichrist, an 11-year-old boy unaware he's meant to bring upon the end of days, forcing them to embark on an adventure to find him and save the world before it's too late.

Why watch it?

Michael Sheen, David Tennant (both featured in full costume above), Jon Hamm and Mark Gatiss all star in the adaptation.

Utopia

Gillian Flynn

When is it on?

The series is currently in pre-production and it will be released sometime in 2019.

What’s it about?

Utopia is a nine-episode series from award-winning Gillian Flynn, based on the British series of the same name written by Dennis Kelly.

A group of young adults who meet online are mercilessly hunted by a shadowy deep state organisation after they come into possession of a near mythical, cult, underground graphic novel.

They discover the conspiracy theories in the comic’s pages may actually be real and are forced in to the dangerous, unique and ironic position of saving the world.

“We are huge fans of Gillian Flynn’s electrifying work,” said Nick Hall, Head of Alternative Series for Amazon Studios.

“She crafts stories that hold her audience in a constant state of suspense and subverts the expectations behind her characters. She will deliver Prime Video members a series they won’t forget, and Utopia’s relevance is sure to connect with viewers around the globe.”

Of the partnership, Gillian says: “Utopia is pure creative catnip to me. Dennis Kelly’s show blew my mind, and he has been so incredibly generous in letting me crack open his world and play around in it and make it my own weird, wild place.

“Utopia is all about exploring resonant issues within dark, twisted storytelling - it's a series that's urgent and current and a little ‘holy cr*p!’, but a hell of a lot of a fun.”

Gillian Flynn is the best-selling author and screenwriter of Golden Globe-nominated film Gone Girl and HBO’s Sharp Objects - one of the most talked about TV series of 2018.

Why watch it?

The show was subject to a fierce bidding war between studios, and stars both Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne - the latter being her first ever TV project.

Eco-Challenge 2019

Bear Grylls Eco Challenge

When is it on?

The show is expected to debut on Prime Video in 2019-2020.

What’s it about?

Billed as the next big unscripted series after The Grand Tour, Bear Grylls is set to host the gruelling expedition competition featuring people from around the world facing off against each other and mother nature, in a show produced by MGM Television.

Why watch it?

Eco-Challenge 2019 is being labelled as the toughest global outdoor multi-sport endurance race on Earth.

Carnival Row

Carnival Row

When is it on?

Carnival Row is slated for a 2019 release on Prime Video.

What’s it about?

As a serial killer preys on mystical creatures in a dark futuristic city, a detective on the case becomes the prime suspect in the murders.

Why watch it?

The show was subject to a fierce bidding war between studios, and stars both Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne - the latter being her first ever TV project.

Lord Of The Rings TV series

When is it on?

Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios, has said that ‘2021 is the hope’ in terms of a Prime Video release but there are other people who ‘wish it was 2020’, so we shall have to keep our fingers crossed on that one.

What’s it about?

Based on the celebrated fantasy novels by J.R.R. Tolkien, the multi-season series will be produced by Amazon Studios in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line Cinema - a division of Warner Bros. Entertainment.

“The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen,” said Sharon Tal Yguado, Head of Scripted Series, Amazon Studios.

“We are thrilled to be taking The Lord of the Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.”

Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins, said: “We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings.

“Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings.”

Peter Jackson's three-part movie adaptation of the world-renowned literary work earned a combined gross of nearly $6 billion worldwide, garnering a combined 17 Academy Awards including Best Picture for the final instalment, The Return of the King.

Why watch it?

The television adaptation will explore new storylines preceding the first part of the book, The Fellowship of the Ring.

The Underground Railroad

When is it on?

The series is currently in pre-production and a release date has yet to be confirmed.

What’s it about?

Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) will direct all episodes of the highly anticipated adaptation of The Underground Railroad.

Based on Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Underground Railroad won the National Book Award and was an Oprah Winfrey Book Club pick.

The book is about Cora, a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia. Life is hell for all the slaves, but especially bad for Cora; an outcast even among her fellow Africans, she is coming into womanhood - where even greater pain awaits. When Caesar, a recent arrival from Virginia, tells her about the Underground Railroad, they decide to take a terrifying risk and escape.

Why watch it?

Barry Jenkins won an Oscar and two Golden Globes for his work on the 2016 movie Moonlight.

The Wheel of Time

The Wheel of Time

When is it on?

The series is currently in pre-production and a release date has yet to be confirmed.

What’s it about?

Robert Jordan's bestselling novels The Wheel of Time - set in an epic world where magic exists, but only women can use it - will be adapted into a female-led action fantasy series by Amazon and Sony. According to Deadline, The Wheel of Time has sold over 90 million books worldwide.

Why watch it?

The Wheel of Time has had a long journey to get produced - the book was published 28 years ago, with NBC first optioning the rights in 2000. The Amazon epic is being adapted and exec produced by Rafe Judkins (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.)

Jordan Peele projects

Jordan Peele

When is it on?

Release dates have yet to be announced.

What’s it about?

The Oscar and Emmy Award winning writer-director of Get Out has signed a first-look deal with Amazon, and two projects are already in production.

The Hunt is a drama about a group of Nazi hunters in the 1970s who seek out justice on their own terms.

Peele is also working on a four-part documentary series, Lorena, which reveals the hidden truths in the notorious case of John Wayne and Lorena Bobbit, and challenges the long-held narrative that surrounded the event.

Twenty-five years on, Lorena is a groundbreaking re-investigation of the deep moral issues and painful human tragedies buried at the heart of this infamous American scandal. Lost in the tabloid coverage and jokes was the opportunity for a national discussion on domestic and sexual assault in America.

Why watch it?

Lorena provides a fresh perspective on the story of Lorena Bobbitt and how one incident laid the groundwork for the modern 24-hour news cycle and increasing sensationalistic media coverage.

Nicole Kidman untitled projects

When is it on?

Release dates have yet to be announced.

What’s it about?

Oscar, Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winner Nicole Kidman (Big Little Lies) and her production company, Blossom Films, are making original series that will be available exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.

“Nicole is a force of nature as both an actress and a producer,” said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios.

“She understands the focus of bringing addictive, entertaining and compelling television to our Prime Video customers as well as movies that will connect with film audiences. Stay tuned for many exciting projects to come in the very near future!”

Kidman says: “I’m excited to start working with Jen Salke and the Amazon team. Our goal at Blossom Films is to create important and entertaining content across multiple platforms, and I can’t think of better collaborators with which to accomplish this.”

Blossom Films, created by Nicole Kidman and Per Saari, executive-produced the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning limited series, Big Little Lies, for HBO.

Neil Gaiman untitled projects

What’s it about?

Neil Gaiman will exclusively work with Amazon Studios on the creation of television series which will premiere globally on Amazon Prime Video in over 200 countries and territories.

Gaiman is the creator of Good Omens and American Gods.
